Summer Sun Safety!

Are you ready for the summer sun?

At RTCC, we’re excited to kick off this summer with our Summer RAC Camp, Mentor Program, and LIT (Leadership In Training) Program! To ensure everyone stays safe while enjoying the upcoming sunny days, we emphasize the importance of proper sun safety to help prevent sunburn, dehydration, and heatstroke.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy the summer sun safely:

  1. Use a 30+ SPF Sunscreen: Apply it generously and reapply it every few hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  2. Wear Protective Clothing: Choose breathable long-sleeved shirts and pants, or UPF protective clothing.
  3. Wear Protective Accessories: Wear hats, especially ones with a wide brim, to help protect your face, ears, and neck. Sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays will also help protect your eyes. If you’re interested in a pair of purple RTCC shades, stay tuned to our socials for more info on how to get them!
  4. Avoid Direct Sun Exposure: Schedule outdoor activities for early mornings or late afternoons to avoid sun exposure when UV rays are the strongest. Spend late mornings or early afternoons in the shade or indoors. You can always plan a fun indoor event or visit a local library or community center!
  5. Create Your Own Shade: Pack an umbrella, or use trees and other shelters in your environment for shade.
  6. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of cold water or other hydrating liquids. Increase your water intake if you’re active or spending extended time in the sun.
  7. Stay Cool: Fill a water bottle three-quarters full and freeze it overnight at an angle with the cap slightly loose. You can top it up in the morning and seal the lid on tight for refreshingly cold water throughout the day. If you don’t top it up, it’ll take longer to melt and can be used as a cold compress to help keep you cool or an ice pack to help keep your lunch cold!
  8. Take Breaks: Regularly rest in the shade or indoors to avoid overheating.

We hope you have a fantastic and fun summer full of sun!
