Vampire Wedding Comes to the Saulter Street Stairwell Gallery

On Tuesday 18 October, the Ralph Thornton Community Centre opened a new exhibition in its Saulter Stairwell Gallery space.  Vampire Wedding by Mika Babineau, is a series of vibrant portraits that focuses on the drama, nobility, and merriment of vampires and the goth culture.

“People often assume goths are gloomy or dreary,” Babineau says in her artist statement, “so I’m looking to highlight Gothic Queer joy and break that stereotype.”

Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Mika Babineau is a Toronto-based artist who specializes in expressive colours and an impressionistic style.

In 2023, Babineau exhibited at RTCC Ace and In Your Face, a powerful series of self-portraits that explored her asexuality and challenged prejudices, both from within and from the outside world.

Vampire Wedding will be on display until 15 December 2024, during regular operating hours.  Admission is free.  The Saulter Street Stairwell Gallery, located in the historic south stairwell of the Ralph Thornton Community Centre, offers space to showcase artwork from both established and emerging artists from diverse backgrounds.
